Jas Smith Pty Ltd (currently trading as Jas Smith Machinery & Engineering) was started in 1865 by the late James Smith, a mill wright from Aberdeen, Scotland.
James Smith built an agricultural machinery factory at 116 Creswick Road, Ballarat where it continued trading from the same location until 1999, when the business was sold to the current owners, and the land was sold to become the current Repco site.
Using a steam engine for power, James Smith devoted his time and mechanical ingenuity to the invention and manufacture of labour-saving agricultural implements.
He made chaff cutters, corn crushers, horse works and one of his greatest successes, a chaff bagging machine. Another success was a hay baling press which was used for pressing hay for shipment to South Africa at the time of the Boer War. After the war, hundreds of chaff cutters and hay bailing presses where sent overseas to assist in food production.
Today we continue the tradition of producing high quality agriculture, industry and -pequine equipment, as well as servicing the commercial and domestic industries through our Jastec Sheet Metal Division. Our products are sold both within Australia, as well as exported overseas.
